Ejido Sierra de Agua
Community forestry protecting biodiversity, supporting local economies, and fighting climate change in Veracruz.
The Ejido Sierra de Agua project in Veracruz, Mexico supports a community-managed forestry program that protects and sustainably manages cloud forest — one of the world's most biodiverse and threatened ecosystems. Cloud forests capture moisture from passing clouds, providing critical water resources for downstream communities while harboring extraordinary biodiversity. The project prevents deforestation, restores degraded land, and generates high-quality carbon removal credits while providing sustainable income for the local ejido community. The initiative demonstrates how indigenous land rights and climate action can be mutually reinforcing. Community members receive training in sustainable forest management, monitoring techniques, and conservation agriculture, building local capacity for long-term stewardship.
