TIST Program in Uganda
Community-led reforestation with verified carbon credits empowering 20,000+ farmers across 10 districts.
The TIST Program in Uganda (The International Small Group and Tree Planting Program) stands out as a beacon of community-driven climate action, combining large-scale reforestation with social empowerment and sustainable development. Since its inception, TIST has mobilized over 20,000 Ugandan farmers across 10 districts to plant over 10 million trees, restore degraded lands, and improve livelihoods — all while generating verified carbon credits. The program empowers smallholder farmers to plant and maintain trees on their land, with 70% of carbon credit revenue going directly back to participants. TIST uses a rotating leadership model ensuring at least 50% of leaders are women, promoting equality and capacity-building. The program has achieved average annual greenhouse gas reductions of over 83,000 tonnes of CO₂e, totaling more than 5 million tonnes since inception. Participants receive training in nursery building, conservation farming, fuel-efficient stoves, and health education, creating multiple pathways out of poverty.
