There are dozens of free carbon footprint calculators, and they rarely give the same answer. This guide compares well-known free calculators that are online in 2026, explains why their results differ, and gives a short checklist for choosing one. One of them is ours: Coffset. We say so where it appears, and the checklist applies to us as much as to anyone.

All were online when we checked in October 2026. Some tools that appeared in older reviews, such as Giki Zero, have since closed.
Why calculators give different results
- Different scope. Some count only home energy and transport; others add food, shopping, waste and services. The more a calculator covers, the higher the result tends to be.
- Different emission factors. Factors for the same activity vary by source, year and country. Flights in particular range widely depending on whether a calculator counts only CO₂ or adds the extra warming effect of emissions at altitude.
- Different electricity data. A calculator that uses your country's grid will give a very different result for the same electricity use in a coal-heavy country and in one powered mostly by hydro, nuclear or renewables.
- Different units. Most report tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, but some report only CO₂, pounds instead of kilograms, or, like the Ecological Footprint, a measure of land rather than carbon.
Two results from different calculators are not comparable unless you know what each one counts. Use one calculator consistently to track your own changes over time.
How to choose: a checklist
- Does it publish its method and sources? You should be able to see which emission factors it uses and where they come from. Coffset's are on our methodology page.
- Does it ask about the big items? Flights, car use, home heating and electricity, and diet make up most of a typical footprint. A calculator that skips any of them will underestimate.
- Does it use your country's data? Electricity especially should reflect where you live.
- Does it explain the result? A breakdown by category is more useful than a single number.
- Does it respect your privacy? A footprint estimate should not require an account or personal details.
- If it sells credits, is that clear and separate? The estimate should not depend on whether you buy anything, and the credits should be verified and retired in a public registry.

Each asks a fixed set of questions and calculates in code with published factors, mainly from the UK government's DEFRA 2026 conversion factors, the International Energy Agency, Ember and Our World in Data. No calculator is exact: all of them estimate. The most reliable ones publish their emission factors, use data for your country and ask about flights, driving, home energy and diet. For a US household, the EPA and CoolClimate calculators are built on US data; for the UK, WWF's; for any country, look for one that uses your national electricity grid.
Because they count different things and use different factors, particularly for flights and electricity. Pick one and use it consistently to track your progress.
Not for most of them, including Coffset. Some ask for an email address only if you want to save or receive your results.
