A business emissions calculator creates an initial estimate of greenhouse-gas emissions from company operations and the value chain. It organises activity data around Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant Scope 3 categories so teams can find hotspots, improve data collection and set reduction priorities.
Understanding Scope 1, 2 and 3
A useful footprint starts with a clear reporting period and organisational boundary. Include the activities your business owns, controls or purchases consistently.
Scope 2: purchased energy
Electricity, steam, heating and cooling bought for company sites. Location- and market-based methods may produce different totals.
Scope 3: value chain
Purchased goods, freight, waste, business travel, commuting, leased assets and other upstream or downstream categories relevant to the company.
Intensity metrics
Emissions per employee, revenue, product or floor area can help track change, but they should be shown alongside the absolute footprint.
How to prepare better business data
Start with utility bills, fuel records, fleet mileage, travel bookings and purchasing data for one consistent period. Prefer measured quantities to spend-based estimates, document exclusions and avoid counting the same activity twice. Recalculate with the same boundary when tracking progress.
Not a replacement for an audited inventory
This calculator provides a screening estimate. It does not by itself satisfy the GHG Protocol, CSRD, ISO 14064 or another disclosure requirement. Material Scope 3 categories, refrigerants, market-based electricity claims and company-specific emission factors may require specialist review and evidence.
