What is a business carbon offset certificate?
A business carbon offset certificate is formal proof that your company has compensated for a measured amount of greenhouse gas emissions by retiring verified carbon credits. Each credit represents one tonne of CO₂e that has been avoided or permanently removed from the atmosphere through an independently audited project — and once it is retired in a registry, it can never be resold or double-counted.
For companies, the certificate is the documentation that sits behind a climate claim. Whether you are offsetting business travel, an event, a product line, or the residual emissions in your annual sustainability report, a verifiable certificate gives auditors, customers, and stakeholders a clear, checkable record of exactly what was offset, when, and through which registries.
How we ensure quality
Not all carbon credits are equal. Coffset sources every offset from a managed portfolio of high-quality avoidance and carbon-removal projects, with credits retired through internationally recognised registries — Verra (VCS), Gold Standard, Climate Action Reserve, and Puro.earth. Our allocation follows the Oxford Principles for Net Zero Aligned Carbon Offsetting, reducing reliance on any single project and shifting steadily toward durable removal to maximise permanence and additionality.
We recommend the widely accepted order of operations: measure your footprint, reduce what you can, and offset the remainder. Our carbon footprint calculator helps you quantify emissions first, so the volume you offset is grounded in real data rather than guesswork.
Key terms, explained
- Carbon offset certificate
- A document proving that a specific quantity of CO₂e has been offset on your behalf by retiring verified carbon credits. It is the evidence behind a climate claim.
- Retirement
- When a carbon credit is permanently cancelled in a registry so it can never be sold or counted again. Retirement is what makes an offset real rather than a transfer.
- Registry
- An independent body (such as Verra or Gold Standard) that issues, tracks, and retires carbon credits, ensuring each tonne is counted only once.
- tCO₂e
- Tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent — the standard unit that expresses the warming impact of all greenhouse gases as a comparable amount of CO₂.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a business carbon offset certificate cost?+
Pricing is a transparent €40 per tonne of CO₂e (€0.04/kg). You choose the volume and see the exact price before paying. For orders above 500 tonnes we offer volume pricing — request a quote.
Can I put my own logo on the certificate?+
Yes. You can upload your company logo to create a co-branded certificate. The Coffset mark always remains for verification integrity, so the certificate stays independently trustworthy.
Are the carbon credits verified?+
Every credit is retired through internationally recognised registries including Verra (VCS), Gold Standard, Climate Action Reserve, and Puro.earth. Each certificate carries a unique QR code linking to its public verification page.
What kinds of projects will my offset support?+
Your offset is allocated across a diversified portfolio of verified projects — from renewable energy and landfill-gas capture to forest conservation and long-lived carbon removal. The mix follows the Oxford Principles for Net Zero Aligned Carbon Offsetting, with a growing share of durable removal over time. You can explore the live portfolio of projects on our Impact Portfolio page.
Can I manage and re-download certificates later?+
Yes. Business certificates are tied to your company account. You can re-download any certificate, reuse your saved logo, and see every offset in your dashboard.
Does my offset include carbon removal?+
Yes — partly, and increasingly so. Avoidance credits prevent new emissions (for example, protecting forests or capturing landfill gas), while removal credits physically take CO₂ out of the atmosphere (for example, reforestation or long-lived storage). Following the Oxford Principles for Net Zero Aligned Carbon Offsetting, our portfolio blends both and shifts steadily toward a higher share of durable carbon removal over time.
Is buying carbon offsets enough to be carbon neutral?+
Offsetting should come after measuring and reducing your emissions, not instead of it. We recommend calculating your footprint, cutting what you can, and then offsetting the remainder. A certificate documents the credits you have retired — it does not by itself certify a “carbon neutral” claim under standards like the EU Green Claims Directive.
How quickly do we receive the certificate?+
Instantly. As soon as payment is confirmed, the credits are retired and your co-branded certificate is generated and available to download — no waiting on a manual process.
Can we offset on behalf of a client or event?+
Yes. You can set the company name and an optional recipient line (for example, the name of an event, product, or client), so the certificate clearly states who the offset is for.
