How the carbon footprint calculator works

The calculator asks a short set of questions about your home energy, travel, food and shopping. Pick an option or type your answer in your own words: the AI only reads typed answers and asks again when one is unclear. If you prefer not to use the AI, fill in the form instead. The calculator’s code then turns each answer into kilograms of CO₂e.

Every number comes from published emission factors, not from the AI: DEFRA 2026 for transport and fuels, Ember for each country’s electricity grid, Our World in Data for food and the US EPA for business purchases. Flights include the extra warming from contrails and nitrogen oxides. The method and every factor are published on the methodology and sources pages.

Your result shows where your emissions come from, how they compare with average footprints, and which changes would cut them most. It is an estimate, shown with a ±10% range, not an audited inventory.

For what you can’t cut yet, you can fund verified climate projects for the same amount: credits are retired in your name and you get a certificate.

Carbon footprint calculator: frequent questions

Is the carbon footprint calculator free?

Yes. The calculator is free and you don’t need an account. If you sign up, you can save your results in a free dashboard.

How accurate is the result?

It is a screening estimate, shown with a ±10% range around the central figure. Business purchases estimated from spending are rougher than that. The more specific your answers, such as your real flight routes or, for a business, kWh from the electricity bill, the closer the estimate.

What does the calculator cover?

Home energy, transport and flights, food, shopping and waste for individuals and households; trips and events; and Scope 1, Scope 2 and selected Scope 3 emissions for businesses.

Does the AI make up the numbers?

No. The AI only reads your answers and asks follow-up questions. Every number comes from the emission-factor database and simple multiplication, which you can check on the sources page.

What can I do with my result?

Start with the biggest categories in your breakdown: the calculator suggests the changes that cut the most. For the emissions you can’t avoid yet, you can buy verified carbon credits from €0.04 per kg, retired in your name.
